Are There Any Risks To Online Dating?

Posted on 28 February 2011

Online dating services have become more popular in recent years, but many people are wondering if it is a safe way to meet new singles. It is estimated that almost $500 million is spent each year on online dating services, so there are plenty of people that view this as a safe activity. Although, it is still a good idea to be cautious about your online activities and the people that you meet.

Most of the time, online dating is very safe (and fun!), but there are a few stories that are concerning. Some of these stories are so frightening, that they may scare someone away from trying this method of meeting new people.

The most common danger of online dating is in the fact that there are many people who lie about their profile information. For example, a married person might list their relationship status as single, and you could unknowingly begin a relationship with someone who is already married. Other people lie about their economic status, age, physical appearance and/or gender.

There are a few safety steps that you can take in order to prevent getting yourself into a bad situation. One of these online dating tips is to stick with dating websites that require a paid membership. These subscription sites often have specific requirements for a person to sign up, which means many of the less aspiring individuals will probably stay away.

If you really want to play it safe, you can even choose a site that keeps the subscriptions exclusive, and each person has to be screened. Sometimes, dating sites will even require background checks to be completed.

You should be cautious about the information that you are willing to share with others, because handing out personal information such as phone numbers, last names, or addresses will take away the anonymity and may mean that the person could potential track you down in person.

In the case that someone is pushing hard to get more information about you, stop talking to them! There are plenty of people to date, and you don’t want to be giving out personal information to someone that you don’t know very well.

Watch for warning signs such as anger, elusiveness, or disrespectful comments. If the person is expressing these types of things online, they will not be a pleasant person to meet face to face. These behaviors may lead to a dangerous situation that you should avoid.

If you choose to meet someone in person, it is strongly suggested that you meet them in a public place instead of telling them where you live. Try meeting up at a restaurant or a coffee shop, and spend some time talking and getting to know each other before you share more specific information.

Of course, you should always use common sense when interacting with anyone, regardless of how you met them. Get yourself out of the situation if you think that they are acting strange or if you don’t feel safe. It is always better to use your common sense and avoid a potentially harmful situation.
